Fresh Cilantro

Cilantro (aka coriander leaves, Chinese parsley, and sometimes culantro) has a potent citrus-sage flavor often found in Chinese, Mexican, Portuguese, Latin American & South Asian dishes.

Cooking can damage cilantro’s fresh flavor, so it is often used raw in salads, ceviche, and salsas or added just before serving to hot dishes like soups, enchiladas, and stews.

Flavors cilantro pairs well with include: avocado,  fresh mint,  parsley, basil, chives, seafood, chicken, chile pepper,  yogurt, shellfish, ginger, citrus fruit, shrimp, tomato, pork, rice, lamb and lentils.

If you like the aromatic flavor of salsa served in Mexican restaurants, you’ll like cilantro. The leaves have an instantly recognizable fragrance that fills a room when you cut them. Sometimes called Chinese parsley, its distinctive aroma and flavor is also part of Caribbean and Asian foods, lending flavor to recaito, salsas, curries, salads, chutneys, herbed butters, and meat marinades.

Cilantro should be stored wrapped in paper towels in a zip top bag in the warmest part of your fridge (usually near the light).

For long term storage of cilantro, lightly coat the leaves with plain olive oil and freeze them. Freezing will preserve cilantro’s flavor, but make it limp and very fragile.

I am a salsa freak. I would buy fresh cilantro for my salsa but most of it would end up going to waste. When I saw this I was overjoyed. Keeps well with paper in the zip-lock bag. I found that as they sell the bunch with roots it stays long in the fridge.

I LOVE Cilantro, but buying and throwing half away I do not love, however this is perfect way of storage 😉
